Why it's the Uniden Headset made the trouble, Uniden

Made previous models obsolete, obsolete obsolete! Obsolete!

Sure, we like the Uniden 5.8GHz dual handset digital cordless phone for all its newfangled features. We're into Random Code digital security, IntegriSound, Distinctive Ringer customization and cetera. It's all good, as the young people say.

With something called "DirectLink mode," for example, you can use this phone's handsets like walkie-talkies! Isn't that cool?

Let's say you're out weeding the vegetable garden, and you've brought the phone with you for whatever reason. Let's also say that your vegetable garden is not farther than, say, 850 feet from your porch, and there's a clear line of sight between them. Now let's say your spouse has dinner ready and wants to summon you to the table. The old way was to holler "[YOUR NAME HERRRRRE]! DINNNERRR!"

That's uncouth, annoys the neighbors, drives property values down, and, over time, can cause nodules on the vocal folds.

With this Uniden cordless phone in DirectLink mode, your spouse can notify you of mealtime over the air! It's easy, convenient—and fun, because you can make up some CB slang for it, like "Big Poppa to Fuzzy Munchkin, we got chicken on china back at the nest. Flutter on back ASAP, 'hear?"

Another clever innovation chez Uniden is that you can use this phone like a baby monitor. With the base or a handset in one room, you can listen in from another, using a second handset as a remote speaker. It's great for espionage, or for discouraging your teenaged kids' make-out sessions.

But the best thing about this Uniden phone isn't a new idea at all: It's an old-fashioned feature that went out of style for no good reason. They call it "AutoTalk," but we call it "the phone picks up when you pick up the phone." How many calls have you missed at friends' or relatives' homes because you were unfamiliar with their particular make of cordless phone, so it took you the final two rings to figure out what to press to answer? Yeah, when you pick up a phone, that oughta engage the line. That's the way we used to do it in the old days, and the new way is not an improvement.

Even better, when you hang this phone back up, it hangs up! Isn't that refreshing? You put the handset back in the cradle and CLICK, you've punched that telemarketer's one-way ticket to Disconnectedsville. We foresee the return of the angry hang-up! That'll be exciting. And it'll be Uniden that helped make it happen.

Warranty: 90 Day Woot Limited Warranty

Features:

  • AutoTalk allows you to answer a call by just removing the handset from the cradle so you don't have to waste time pushing buttons. AutoStandby allows you to hang up by simply returning the handset to the cradle
  • Protects you against mis-billed calls that might result from your phone being activated by other equipment, this series has Random Code digital security, which automatically selects one of over approx. 65,000 digital security codes for the handset and base
  • Digital Spread Spectrum Technology uses a wider frequency band than standard digital transmissions. The result is a more secure conversation with the clarity of digital sound, extended range, and minimal interference from other cordless phones
  • IntegriSound Built in sound quality which provides life-like conversations
  • DirectLink mode, allows you to use 2 or more handsets as radio transceivers (walkie-talkies) without the base unit or a telephone line
  • Room/Baby Monitor mode, allows you to monitor sounds in another room. Place the base or a handset in the room you wish to monitor; it will function as a microphone. A second handset can be set to function as a remote speaker, allowing you to monitor sounds in the room
  • Distinctive Ringer allows you to assign a designated ring tone to a stored phonebook number. When a call is received and the Caller ID information matches the information in one of the phonebook memory locations, the phone uses the distinctive ring assigned to that particular Caller
  • True Banner lets you customize the name your handset displays. The name will be displayed on the LCD screen during Standby Mode, Intercom, Intercom Hold, Room Monitor and Copy Phonebook operation. The banner name will be displayed on the receiving handset as well
  • Ring Time allows you to set the number of rings from 2, 4, or 6 before the caller hears the answering system plays the outgoing message
  • Record Time sets the duration for recording the incoming messages. You have three record time options. The options "1 minute" or "4 minutes" set the duration for recording the incoming messages. "Announce only" answers the call but prevents the caller from leaving a message
