Boost your Home Wireless Network Signal

via Dumb Little Man - Tips for Life by Dumb Little Man on May 11, 2007

wifi extenderAfter moving my home office to the basement it was damn near impossible to get a strong wireless signal all the way upstairs in the bedrooms. It was miserable and I even tried building my own signal extender (see image). After fussing with it too much, #7 from the list below eventually did the trick for me.

If you need to beef up your home wireless signal, Daily Wireless lists out some things to try. Each of these items is fully explained on their site.

  1. Upgrade routers and wireless network adapters to (interim) 802.11n.
  2. Move the router off the floor and keep it as far as possible from walls and metal objects
  3. Place your router (or access point) in a central location in the office
  4. Upgrade your router's antenna
  5. Upgrade the antenna for your notebook's wireless network adapter
  6. Check your wireless channel, and change it if necessary
  7. Invest in a wireless repeater
  8. Update your router's firmware and your network adapter's drivers
  9. Reduce wireless interference
  10. Use equipment from a single vendor.
