Build a DIY Schaschlik Knife Block On the Cheap [DIY]

Sent to you by David via Google Reader:

You could shell out $125 for a very clever Schaschlik knife block, or you could roll up your DIY sleeves and make your own version for less than $15 like blogger Chris Diclerico.

All it took was two 3-foot long pine shelves from Home Depot ($4 each), several bags of bamboo skewers from the 99-cent store, and some elbow grease. The end result is a knife block that you can stick any knife into, very similar to the extremely expensive commercial version.

If this DIY seems familiar, we mentioned it briefly in our top 10 DIY projects for an extra day off—but it seemed worth a second standalone mention. Anyone try it since we mentioned it last? Let's hear it in the comments.

Update: As a few commenters have pointed out, you can find a similar version of this knife block for a much more reasonable $30 from Bed Bath & Beyond.

Target Testing "Warehouse Club" Style Deals

via The Consumerist by Meg Marco on 1/5/10

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune says Target is testing out "warehouse" style deals in space usually used for seasonal merchandise. Examples mentioned include: "supersize jugs of laundry detergent ";"bulk-size packages of batteries";"bins of $1 neon-colored flip flops," and "packs of athletic socks for $7."

From the Star-Tribune:

The seven-week promotion, "The Great Save," started showing up in stores over the weekend. It is one of the Minneapolis-based retailer's boldest moves yet to signal to recession-battered consumers that Target can deliver deals alongside trendy fashion.
The promotion seems aimed to replicate the Costco experience with items "that aren't normally found in stores, including Samsonite luggage, Calvin Klein T-shirts and Ed Hardy handbags."

Bacon Salt Gift Pack: The Only Thing You Need To Buy Today

bacon lip balm? can you buy that in bulk, separately?

via The Consumerist by Laura Northrup on 1/1/10

We don't have a Morning Deals post today, and that's because sellout.woot has the only thing on the entire Internet that you need to buy: the Bacon Salt Ultimate Bacon Lover's Gift Pack. It has three different flavors of Bacon Salt, a jar of Baconnaise, and a tube of bacon-flavored lip balm.

You're welcome.
